Life @ NITT

Two years into this supposedly esteemed institution and I feel its time that i post something about it here. At the outset this college is one of the most sought after institutes just after the IITs and admission is through AIEEE exams conducted by CBSE (only till this year,i am told that the NITs will themselves conduct it from next year onwards). As I faired decently well in the exam i was looking forward to join this institute and since i already had three of cousins passed out from this institute- their go ahead response did not lead me into doubts or hesitations and i went for it. The first day intro was interesting and probably we expected too much from it. But two years later i just turn the pages of the past to what all i came across in this institute. Honestly like any other reputed institute NITT life has two faces or rather two perspectives. Let me tell the latter first. For a person outside This place is one of the best with good placements and good scope for higher studies abroad under this banner. People here dont have too many classes to pester them and the facilities must be excellent (mere assumption-bless you!). Most importantly the fee structure is excellent and very much lesser compared to other institutes(except IITs and other premieres equal or greater than NITT in their scale). So life here must more or less blessed bliss and heavenly( mind you this is infact true to some extent for some students in some cursed self financing institute). But just like that we can never see the moon's other side from the earth it goes that a person outside can never see what is going on inside.
Now let me give the student's perspective(of course if you expect me to give out all the negatives then get a break, mind you its my college and i am still a part of it :) ). The classes here are definitely seldom conducted with reference to other institutes but mind you we have similar amount of syllabus to study and mostly portions are completed (atleast by circulating the teacher's notes as xerox copies :( ). The labs and libraries ahem! no comments you just have to be here to know the real situation but no sensible person will call them world class in standard. Now coming to the hostels the answer is they are pretty old and the mess facilities the best response is "familiarity breeds huge contempt! :( ". The sports facilities, the gym, swimming pool and others are quite good to evade chastise comments. The fee structure is really good. The staff are both nice and intimidating (good blend of both) and sometimes you cant help but get frustrated. There are enough holidays to soothe you and enough fun in fests to refresh you. Some rules are as always queer and poor and you have got to abide by them. Opportunities are far and high but the system is not transparent and you need, influence, luck and most importantly Good Seniors! The exposure is quite great and you cant find this in many other places. The best part is the organisation of exams. Very fast, precise and at a stretch(many may disagree with this but i personally like it ). Coming to nature and vegetation this place is almost competing in the desert zone and its also very remote from the main city but there are cows everywhere to threaten you or inspire you about unity is strength- indeed they are more luckier and charmed than us. And i am sorry am not going to tell about girls simply because i dont know. When it comes to national character this place is one of the best as it links almost all corners of the country in one unit. CLC, OCTAgon,T & P are indeed of great standards.
Thus on the whole one may get a feel that this is more than enough but only the students experience the practical difficulties and the most raised question is that" given the funds and the support from the central Govt and the reputation and the level of the students(which i consider the reason for the institutes's reputation) the administration can definitely come up with better facilities and infrastructure and raise the reputation far higher(truly so) and can improve the student life standard (atleast in hostels and mess). But there is always a sense of pride and achievement once you are outside and when you tell other people that you are pursuing your BTech in this institute. So be it I am looking forward to the next couple of years in this place and after that good or bad it would be time to say "GOOD BYE!"

Thank you for a patient reading. Do visit soon, Take care

Hi Sai..Firstly , I'm impressed da..I'd have never guessed you were a blogger (a pretty articulate one too, i must add). You really summed up my feelings on NITT in this article da.All along i thought I was the only 1 harbouring such feelings towards the place.Truly the Duality is alarming.Take me for instance. Whilst at NITT i'm always whining , groaning , moaning(add your own synonyms..) about how life here sucks, the Infrastructure needs polishing up , and yeah , the loopholes in the entire system..But when I'm back to Base 1 in the hols, expecting to live the next 30 peaceful days with no reminder watsoever of NITT, i am almost certainly jostled by the seemingly innocent question " Hows NITT" ,"Great isn't it"? from one of my numerous relatives.. Though I could start listing out the reasons I "dont think so" , my tongue lets slip , in a mechanical tone, a reaffirmation of their statement ..I've surprise myself several occasions, with my own words..Not willing to potray myself as a person who contradicts himself i go on and on...Suddenly all the positives come out , you know, the good exposure, the hostel life , the surplus of movies available :) ..I guess it all depends on how you look at it huh??
Well all in al , my comment( sorry for making it as long as ur article itself :) ) was jus an appreciation of ur article and a re-telling of ur story.. -xd
